Memoriam Portraits are one of the most personal commission options I offer: I can create a drawing of a loved one who has passed, alongside drawings of your children (or other family members), as they would look if they were all together today.

I created this option after drawing one for my own family and realizing the powerful healing affect it had on us after the loss of my Dad. You can read about my own experience with this process here.

This portrait example was based on a photo of my Dad taken in 2012, and two separate photos of my daughters taken in 2020. This moment with all 3 of them at these ages could never have happened. But through the power of art, I was able to create a new memory that I always wanted to have.

If you chose to work with me on a portrait for your own family, the process is quite personal. I make sure we choose the perfect photos to use as my reference for your drawing. Often I make subtle changes to a composition to emphasize the relationships, and combine multiple photos to make a new composition. For this type of commission I will likely need many photos in order to build a new and unique composition.

I will guide you through the process honestly and sensitively. In the end, you will have a family heirloom to treasure for generations. Read testimonials from previous customers.

The Process:

- Send me the photo(s) you would like me to base your drawing on. If you can, tell me the story about why it's so special to you.

- Let me know if you prefer my black-and-white drawing style, or my more painterly style in color.

- Select the size of the art you would like in the drop-down menu.

- You also have the option to have your art professionally framed so it arrives at your door ready to hang on your wall. I highly recommend this step to ensure the longevity of your drawing. Learn more about the archival framing process then add on a frame to your order.

- The in-depth drawing process for an "In Memoriam" commission takes about 4-5 weeks. Expect a lot of email communication as we sort through the photos.

My signature will be printed on paper.
You will not receive a digital file.

What is a digital painting or drawing?

This is art created on a digital drawing tablet with professional art tools. I draw your portrait by hand on a screen.

    Revisions

You will be shown a pencil drawing preview of your portrait. At this point you can suggest up to three slight rounds of revisions, if necessary (Sketch 1, Sketch 2, Sketch 3). Once the sketch is approved, no more edits are accepted for the drawing. Then I begin the color. The process repeats: Up to three rounds of slight revisions, if necessary. If more than three revisions rounds are requested of the sketch or painting, an additional drawing fee will be added to support the time extension.

    What does "giclee print" mean?

Giclee is French word, pronounced see-clay. It is the most superior of printing techniques. The special pigment-based inks are archival and bond to the paper, which helps them last for generations. The ink includes UV inhibitors that prevent the art from fading. They are also delicate, which means the art should be framed safely to ensure longevity.

    How is art shipped?

Commissions are shipped flat, framed by hand (if requested), safely packaged and mailed directly from my professional printer. You will receive a tracking number. US shipping times are generally 2-3 weeks from the date I send the completed drawing to the printer, or 3-4 weeks if framing. I have no control over arrival times once it ships out or additional fees that incur. International orders may incur more shipping fees for you and extended travel time over which I have no control.

    Privacy

If you would like a portrait drawn from a photo that is private, I will keep it that way. I am extremely grateful to the families who trust me with their most intimate imagery. Every family signs a permission slip that gives you the opportunity to state your internet boundaries. I only share commissioned art with the public IF I have been given specific approval from the families.
